Will demoting sitelinks cause google demote my search ranking?

Recently I have demoted/undemoted sitelinks in Google webmaster tools for my sites… And few days after I found my sites search ranking got lower than before…
Will demoting sitelinks cause google demote my search ranking? Or google is dancing? How can I deal with it…
